Sunday 9AM - 2pm · All Skill Levels · Ascent Guides & Swiftwater Safety Institute

What’s the lightest pin kit you can get away with? Does a 3:1 system really need pulleys? Are ultralight throw bags worth the trade-off?

This clinic will review and explain the pros and cons of compact rescue gear, when and how to use it, and how to make smart safety decisions in the backcountry. Participants will cover basic Swiftwater techniques and key considerations for expedition-style paddling, where weight, space, and minimalism matter.

Taught by Ascent Guides & Swiftwater Safety Institute instructor Cam Fenton, this clinic is ideal for packrafters, expedition kayakers, or any paddler venturing far from the road.

This course is not a complete Swiftwater Rescue certification. It should be considered introductory or supplemental training, offering practical insight into the gear, principles, and techniques used in remote whitewater settings.

NOTE: AWA membership is a requirement for participation of Kanfest events. AWA membership can be obtained by joining a club or directly through the AWA. To sign up with the AWA, please visit https://www.albertawhitewater.ca/membership.
